So this is a few days long over due, lol. I am getting around to posting it. Sorry in the delay.
As you know it has been cold outside because it has been winter. The other day it was supposed to be around 60. I don’t recall if it ever did hit 60 or not. But I can tell you the weather was pretty nice the other day. Which brings me to one of the first topics about the hike.
With the warmer temps. the snow and ice were melting. Making the trails a mix of ice, snow and mud. The snow was melting onto the ice making it way slippery.
So this hike was definitely a memorable one. It was a short one but a memorable one.
They are still doing construction out there. I thought it was supposed to have been done a few months ago. I guess they went over schedule.
My hike was pretty short and simple for the most part. As soon as I got onto the trails, I knew that it was going to be an interesting hike indeed with the trail conditions. When I first started my hike, it was alot of ice and mud. As the hike went on the snow melted and made things more muddy and more slippery on the ice.
I slipped a few times. Actually shocked I didn’t fall a ton, considering the trail conditions.
The lake was still frozen. I did not expect to see that. I figured with the mild winter the lake wouldn’t be frozen. I was wrong, it looked pretty thick still. At least it appeared to be anyways.
I went to the Willow Creek area. Heads up some of the trails are closed and you are not able to walk on some trails. Thankfully know that part of the part very well. So I ended up finding a few trails that were still open 🙂 It took some time, but I found some trails that were open 🙂 I think they closed down the main ones closest to the roads, is waht it appeared to be. Because the trails further back in the woods were all open.
I saw several people on the trails. I can’t recall how many, but there were several people back in the Willow Creek area.
I went back to the Willow Creek area. Just my typical hike to get some exercise in. I took my cell phone and my go pro and my dslr.
I was hoping to get some photos. My original goal was to take a lot of photos. But that did not go as planned. With the trail conditions and not much to photograph, I got maybe 10 photos. So yeah, my planned so did not go as planned, LOL. The trail conditions were horrid. But like I said, I got a few.
I went over to the stone hut area. A lot of graffiti in that hut again. Sad to see all that graffiti. It was the typical satanic and gang crap. So it probably some teens that did the graffiti.
I was at the hut maybe 5 minutes. I mainly was on a hike for the exercise, because I know that part of the park extremely well and have photographed a ton in that area of the park. I wanted to use my dslr, but I had my bigger lens on it. I was hoping to see some wildlife. That didn’t happen, so my photos were mainly from the cellphone.
I left the stone hut and figured i would walk over to the baseball field area. I figured since it was winter and the brush should be down right now (which it was) it would be a perfect time to go see the baseball field. That is maybe a .25 mile from the hut. Not far at all. But the hike took longer, way longer than expected because the trail conditions.
I know I sound like a broken record for the trail conditions, lol. It was just something you had to experience, to understand.
I made it to the baseball field. As expected the brush was down. So I was able to walk up in the field.
As I walked, i noticed some HUGE prints in the snow. No, it was not bigfoot! All thought that would be pretty cool, lol. Nah these were huge animal prints.
I showed the prints to some, and many said it was a large wolf or a bear.
Now I will say the prints were melting quickly, so the perfect form of the prints were not perfect by no means. But you can see they are large in size and have the claws. I put my foot next to the print to show just how big the prints were. I wear a size 14 shoe! So you tell me what you think made these prints?
I have saw a mountain lion out there in the Willow Creek area in the past. Once once. I always heard rumors of them, but not to long ago I was hiking and saw some deer. As I watched the deer I noticed a mountain lion stalking the deer. And then the mountain lion spotted me. Yeah, that was soooooo not cool. But I know they are out there. I always thought it was a lie. But I have saw them, so i know for sure they do really exist out there.
But back on topic. I walked through the field and over to the ball diamond fence. It is really hidden, so if you did not know it was there you probably would never know it is even there. I like to go over there and just try to reflect on what the part of the park looked liked decades ago. Seeing the ball diamond fence, is a piece of history. I just sat there for a few to reflect on what that part of the park may have looked like decades ago and now the only stuff that really reflects the history of that part of the park is that fence and the stone hut.
By this time it was really warming up. So I knew the trails were only going to be getting more slippery. So I figured it be best to just head back. So that way it wouldn’t be so dangerous.
You know I did not even see one wildlife as I was on this hike. Scratch that, I saw a few squirrels. But that was it. I was actually kinda shocked I didn’t come across some turkey or deer.
So I headed back. On my way back I encountered many people on the trails. We were all sliding on the ice. As it literally sliding all the way down the hills on the ice without even moving my feet an inch. Like I said, it definitely was a memorable hike, because of the poor trail conditions. . .
Overall thoughts on my hike: Was definitely good to get out and get a hike in. However I was not a fan of the poor trail conditions. But then again it made for better exercise which was my overall goal for the hike. There was no real colors in the woods being that it is still winter time. And there was no wildlife besides the squirrels. So there was not a whole lot to photograph. It was a memorable hiking experience because it the trails were icy, snow, muddy and made it difficult to even walk. So mark this down as one of the most boring for entertainment value because of the lack of colors and wildlife, but scores high for the exercise value
