Rickie Traeger: Sunday Blog, Kinda Bittersweet

So yesterday was kinda bittersweet.

My family down south was hit by a large tornado.  Thankfully they are all alive. My cousin broke her foot. But other than that everyone is OK.  They did have a lot of damage though.
I think the last I heard, they rated it an EF-4 tornado.  And 22 were injured, and no deaths.  That was a very large tornado that ripped through the heart of town. Please keep my family down and all the others that were effected by the tornado, in your thoughts and prayers.

With the sadness of what had happened to my family down south.  I was able to have my first thunderstorm of the season for me. I have been waiting awhile now, for a thunderstorm!  So when it hit, I was excited.  Really happy knowing it is storm season again.

A little after 9 pm an EF-1 tornado hit the Ogle County and it had lifted just before it hit Will and I as we did storm spotting.  It touched down just East of Oregon.  And headed right for us.  Ended up being a lot of power poles and power lines, and some structures damaged. Thankfully it was mostly farmland that it crossed. Below are some photos I took of the damage.

After the tornado hit, it was literally stars and the moon right after.

I was able to see an amazing meteor fly across the sky as well!

So it was a day full of emotions and Mother Nature.

Rickie Traeger: Thursday March 26th Blog

Good evening everyone!

I heard possible thunderstorms are on the way in the next few days.  I really hope that is true! I have been wanting to have a thunderstorm for a long time now. Now that winter is fading away, it is Spring now and time for some good storms 🙂

I want to take a second and give a HUGE shout out to a special woman that was able to help me out yesterday.  My mask had broken just prior to her helping me out. And this woman was able to help me. And I can’t say THANK YOU enough!  I don’t know if she will ever read this or not, but words can’t describe how thankful I am. God bless you!

I am about to kick on some X-Files after I finish up writing this. I have been watching all the episodes again 🙂  I am currently in season 6 at episode 17.  As you know, I love this show!  I have watched ALL the episodes, countless times. No joke. I have watched all the seasons and episodes a ton of times. I am sure those around me are probably sick of it, lol.  But hey what can I say, I love X-Files 🙂

Hope everyone is staying home and abiding the shelter in place! I hope everyone stays healthy and safe!

Rickie Traeger: We All Take Life For Granted…

First and foremost, my condolences to the family and friends of the victims in the double fatal accident a bit ago in Rockford.

Please keep the family and friends and 1st responders in your thoughts and prayers.

There was a rollover accident in the 2100 block of 16th st a little bit ago.

2 people passed away and a 3rd victim was transported to a local ER.

I always hate working fatal scenes.   I can tell you every fatal scene I have ever worked over the years.

They are always heartbreaking to work.

We all go about our lives every day and do not realize or grasp the concept of how precious life really is, until it is too late.

Each and every time I work a fatal scene, it is sad. But it also reminds me of how lucky we are to be alive and to have those we love around us.

Also at the same time, I realize that some family is about to have the worst day in their life 🙁

I know doing what I do (Journalist) I have worked many fatals over the years.

And I can tell you I always dread working fatal scenes.  By far the most heartbreaking scenes to work.

This scene was a double fatal, possible triple. 2 Confirmed fatals.

Words cannot describe working a fatal scene.  My heart goes out to all those that are involved.

It is a grim reminder that we all take life for granted. The most cherished thing, and we don’t realize just how quick it can be gone.

Please take a second and hug those that you love, and tell them you love them.

And to keep all those involved in this horrific scene, in your thoughts and prayers

Rickie Traeger: Coronavirus And Mass Panic…………

Well I am at a loss of words. I do not know what to think or say…

I went to the store yesterday to get just some normal everyday things.

The stores were a madhouse. I had to go to several different stores just to find basic toilet paper…

The store said they are limiting everything to 1 per person. Milk, bread, eggs, toilet paper, etc…

The thing is, people ar enow buying it because they have too because everyone else is buying it. So it is out of stock.

So those who need it, can’t have it because of those who want it. SMH…

I mean yes, for a long time I didn’t take this coronvirus thing seriously.

But then when the government starting shutting things down. That is when I realized there might be something to this.
I have NEVER saw the government do this, ever.  So they must know something they aren’t telling the public.

So yes, I do see how people can panic some. BUT…………..  I personally do not feel that is has warranted enough to panic enough to buy out the damn stores…

I mean for gods sake, do not hoard. We are all in this together. It is not a me thing, it is a WE THING!

So do not buy the damn stores out, save some for the others…

You know what I think is funny, all these people who laughed at preppers and said something like that would never happen and the preppers were over-reacting.  Well guess what, the preppers are the ones who will be surviving and the rest who were laughing will be now thinking twice about preppers…  Sad but true

I hope everyone stays safe and does what the CDC says.   Wash your hands, stay away from others, etc…

Winnebago County has their first confirmed case of it and the health department has said they expect many others in the future.

Rickie Traeger: My Hike The Other Day

So this is a few days long over due, lol.  I am getting around to posting it.  Sorry in the delay.

As you know it has been cold outside because it has been winter.  The other day it was supposed to be around 60. I don’t recall if it ever did hit 60 or not. But I can tell you the weather was pretty nice the other day.   Which brings me to one of the first topics about the hike.

With the warmer temps. the snow and ice were melting. Making the trails a mix of ice, snow and mud.  The snow was melting onto the ice making it way slippery.

So this hike was definitely a memorable one.  It was a short one but a memorable one.

They are still doing construction out there. I thought it was supposed to have been done a few months ago. I guess they went over schedule.

My hike was pretty short and simple for the most part.  As soon as I got onto the trails, I knew that it was going to be an interesting hike indeed with the trail conditions.  When I first started my hike, it was alot of ice and mud.  As the hike went on the snow melted and made things more muddy and more slippery on the ice.

I slipped a few times.  Actually shocked I didn’t fall a ton, considering the trail conditions.

The lake was still frozen. I did not expect to see that. I figured with the mild winter the lake wouldn’t be frozen. I was wrong, it looked pretty thick still. At least it appeared to be anyways.

I went to the Willow Creek area.   Heads up some of the trails are closed and you are not able to walk on some trails. Thankfully  know that part of the part very well. So I ended up finding a few trails that were still open 🙂  It took some time, but I found some trails that were open 🙂   I think they closed down the main ones closest to the roads, is waht it appeared to be. Because the trails further back in the woods were all open.

I saw several people on the trails.   I can’t recall how many, but there were several people back in the Willow Creek area.

I went back to the Willow Creek area.  Just my typical hike to get some exercise in.  I took my cell phone and my go pro and my dslr.

I was hoping to get some photos. My original goal was to take a lot of photos.  But that did not go as planned.  With the trail conditions and not much to photograph, I got maybe 10 photos.  So yeah, my planned so did not go as planned, LOL.  The trail conditions were horrid.  But like I said, I got a few.

I went over to the stone hut area.  A lot of graffiti in that hut again. Sad to see all that graffiti.  It was the typical satanic and gang crap.  So it probably some teens that did the graffiti.

I was at the hut maybe 5 minutes. I mainly was on a hike for the exercise, because I know that part of the park extremely well and have photographed a ton in that area of the park. I wanted to use my dslr, but I had my bigger lens on it. I was hoping to see some wildlife. That didn’t happen, so my photos were mainly from the cellphone.

I left the stone hut and figured i would walk over to the baseball field area. I figured since it was winter and the brush should be down right now (which it was) it would be a perfect time to go see the baseball field.  That is maybe a .25 mile from the hut.  Not far at all.  But the hike took longer, way longer than expected because the trail conditions.

I know I sound like a broken record for the trail conditions, lol. It was just something you had to experience, to understand.

I made it to the baseball field.  As expected the brush was down. So I was able to walk up in the field.

As I walked, i noticed some HUGE prints in the snow. No, it was not bigfoot!  All thought that would be pretty cool, lol.   Nah these were huge animal prints.

I showed the prints to some, and many said it was a large wolf or a bear.

Now I will say the prints were melting quickly, so the perfect form of the prints were not perfect by no means.  But you can see they are large in size and have the claws. I put my foot next to the print to show just how big the prints were. I wear a size 14 shoe!  So you tell me what you think made these prints?

I have saw a mountain lion out there in the Willow Creek area in the past. Once once. I always heard rumors of them, but not to long ago I was hiking and saw some deer. As I watched the deer I noticed a mountain lion stalking the deer.  And then the mountain lion spotted me. Yeah, that was soooooo not cool.   But I know they are out there. I always thought it was a lie. But I have saw them, so i know for sure they do really exist out there.

But back on topic.  I walked through the field and over to the ball diamond fence.  It is really hidden, so if you did not know it was there you probably would never know it is even there.  I like to go over there and just try to reflect on what the part of the park looked liked decades ago.  Seeing the ball diamond fence, is a piece of history.  I just sat there for a few to reflect on what that part of the park may have looked like decades ago and now the only stuff that really reflects the history of that part of the park is that fence and the stone hut.

By this time it was really warming up. So I knew the trails were only going to be getting more slippery. So I figured it be best to just head back. So that way it wouldn’t be so dangerous.

You know I did not even see one wildlife as I was on this hike.   Scratch that, I saw a few squirrels.  But that was it.  I was actually kinda shocked I didn’t come across some turkey or deer.

So I headed back.  On my way back I encountered many people on the trails.  We were all sliding on the ice.  As it literally sliding all the way down the hills on the ice without even moving my feet an inch.  Like I said, it definitely was a memorable hike, because of the poor trail conditions. . .

Overall thoughts on my hike: Was definitely good to get out and get a hike in. However I was not a fan of the poor trail conditions. But then again it made for better exercise which was my overall goal for the hike.  There was no real colors in the woods being that it is still winter time. And there was no wildlife besides the squirrels.  So there was not a whole lot to photograph.  It was a memorable hiking experience because it the trails were icy, snow, muddy and made it difficult to even walk. So mark this down as one of the most boring for entertainment value because of the lack of colors and wildlife, but scores high for the exercise value

Rickie Traeger: Good Monday Morning!

Good Monday morning!

So it is 6 am and here I am munching down on some delicious thin mints.  Probably not the best way to start a day. I take that back it probably is the best way to start a day!!!  🙂

Yesterday was pretty nice out.  A little windy though.   I ended up going for a hike.   Was good and bad, lol. I will start with the bad.  The trails were icy or muddy.  So, it made for a memorable hike, lol.  I slipped and slide for the most of the hike. Now with the good, lol. Got some exercise, OK some dam good exercise! Was pretty out there, not a lot of color for obvious reasons. Alot of the trees and plants are not bloomed yet this season. So everything was kinda blah.  But I got to see areas I haven’t saw in awhile, because you can see for a ways in the woods right now.

I will post some the photos in my next blog post here. Along with a detailed blog about the hike.  It be later today sometime.   I a lot of photos with my cell phone instead of my dslr.  I had my big lens on hoping to see some wildlife. But that didn’t happen so my dslr was to long to get the photos I wanted, the wider shots. So I used my cell phone. I have to transfer them to the PC here. Then I will post them. So be sure to keep a look out for the next post 🙂

I am off to play a game of IRacing.   I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Stay dry! It is supposed to rain all day I heard. So enjoy your day and stay dry 🙂

Rickie Traeger: March 4th Blog

Good morning or evening, however you look at it.  It is 12:38 am as I write this.

I was sick earlier today and just laid in bed. I haven’t  had much sleep.  I am feeling better now, still under the weather some.  I am watching some X-Files and kicking back.  I am able to finally eat some. I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Probably not idealistic considering I am under the weather still some. But I figured it would coat my stomach some.

I was looking at the weather forecast.  It looks like it is going to be a nice weekend!  Speaking of weather.  The tornado that hit the Nashville areas the other night. My condolences goes to those family and friends who lost their loved ones.  It hit overnight and the last I heard there were 22 fatalities. I heard there were two tornadoes. An EF-4 and an EF-3 that hit that area.  I have saw a few videos of the tornado at night, it looked like a big stovepipe tornado. And at the time it still had yet to break daylight so the main damage area was not published yet. I saw a few trees down and a business wall blown down.  Then later on in the day I saw more videos and photos of the damage that was being released. And it is a sad situation. Please keep everyone effected in your thoughts and prayers.

Rickie Traeger: March 3rd 2020 Blog

  • Rickie

Good morning everyone, Happy Tuesday!

You know what day it is?  Yup, Project Blue Book!

I am kicking back watching some X-Files and I am about to work on some Freedom of Information Act stuff for my site.

I been thinking about going on a vacation. I haven’t been on one for years and am definitely in need of one.

I just don’t know where I want to go.    I was checking out train tickets. I think it be cool to ride a train across country to watch the scenery.   It is good we live in the Midwest. Pretty much anywhere I wanna go is about all the same distances, lol.  I thought about renting a car for a week and just driving around.  But if I do that I dunno if i would be able to get the car back in a week lol.  You know what be cool, it is kinda on my bucket list. To go see Area 51.   Yes, I know there is not much to see. But to get my photo at the gate, that be cool.  Also, I think it be pretty awesome to be out in the desert and to look up at the night sky.  No city light pollution, just stars. I have been told you can see stars forever.   Another thing I would like to do is go on a cruise. I heard the same thing, it is so dark you can see tons of stars!  As you can see, I want to do a lot of things, lol.

I am popping off of here and I am going to watch some X-Files 🙂

Hope everyone has an awesome day!

Rickie Traeger: March 2nd Blog

Happy Monday!

I was scanning the band earlier tonight and heard a GMRS net.  That was the first time I have heard that. Sounded like most of them were to the North of me.  But holy cow it was cool hearing the GMRS being used, and used properly.   I have my license for the GMRS, but never hear anything on it. So it was cool just hearing something on it!

Sooooooooooooo I missed the Walking Dead.  I am about to watch the re-run of it.  Sounds like it was a good episode and I missed alot.  I guess here shortly, I will find out!   It is weird seeing Dani from Hocus Pocus on the Walking Dead.  And I am still getting used to the new cast. It is like a whole new show in itself, because like 98% of the original cast is gone 🙁

I been wanting to go for a hot air balloon ride.  Anyone know where I can do that locally?  I know it will be a bit before that happens, because it is still cold out. But I want to look into it and start planning it, so when it does get warm enough I can do it.  Also, Skydiving.  But i think I know in Beloit and Rochelle offer those 🙂
