Rickie Traeger: Sunday January 10th

Well my plans were to blog after watching Svengoolie. But that did not happen, lol.  I ended up falling asleep.  I got to see a friend of mine I haven’t saw in awhile yesterday, Travis.   It was good seeing him.  We grew up together and had many great times back in the day.  Definitely good seeing him and catching up.

I have been watching the Nascar Full Race Replays on Youtube. Getting back into the Nascar mode 🙂

Below you can watch the race I am currently watching as I type this, Talladega!

Not to much planned for today. Doing RS and some ham radio.  Am also going to do some online training courses and a webinar for some weather stuff. I know it, but I am one of those people that like to keep things fresh in my mind. I always look at it as, why do the one and done motto. Basically why would you take a course and study something just once. Because over time you lose knowledge. So I like to keep things fresh in my mind, by redoing the courses and webinars.  One of the key things to survival is knowing what the weather is about to do.

One of the things that got me into weather and motivated me:

I have learned many times over the years. MANY times that the local weathermen on TV are clueless to what is actually going on out in the field.  I have saw MANY funnel clouds and tornadoes in Winnebago County, that the weathermen down right refuse to believe happened, because the NWS or their radar says did not happen.

But yet, right in front of me there is a funnel or a tornado.  MANY times…

I have lost all trust in the local weather people, based on their actions towards me.  Going to call me names and call me a liar. When I am trying to help the community by reporting severe weather to them… SMH.

I might add there were photos and videos to prove the funnels and tornados.  And they still deny it…

So, long story short: That is why I enjoy doing weather spotting. Because I know for a fact that eyes on the ground in the field are 1,000 times better than a weatherman on tv going by their equipment…  based on my own experiences.

And I know many people who will say the same exact thing.

See it is one thing to deny severe weather reports. But to be a jerk to the person that is trying to help you. Well that was the last straw on my end.  That is when I went full force into learning weather, radar, forecasts, etc…  And even went and got my ham radio license.

So that is why it is very important to keep up to date and keep things fresh in your mind because your eyes and ears will always be better than any equipment made. If you are trained properly.

But that is why I retake the courses and webinars and other training over again, multiple times.

Kick back and watch some Nascar with me!

Rickie Traeger: May 23rd 2020 Storm Chase

May 23rd 2020 Storm Chase

The NWS predicted some severe weather was possible for our area later in the day. I honestly did not think much of it.
Because the last time I looked at the models, it did not impress me much.
So I did not think much was going to happen in our area.  I guess I was wrong………..

Bill (KC9OJP)  started up a Winnebago County SKYWARN activation net.

(Listen to the audio below!)

I might write up a detailed article about this chase, so look forward to that later on sometime.

Below are several videos and photos.  Wish I could recover my content from my cell phone.
My cell phone got soaked and ended up being fried. So I lost all my photos and videos from the storm.
I was able to recover some, but not the good footage 🙁

Watch the videos in HD if possible

Rickie Traeger: Sunday Blog, Kinda Bittersweet

So yesterday was kinda bittersweet.

My family down south was hit by a large tornado.  Thankfully they are all alive. My cousin broke her foot. But other than that everyone is OK.  They did have a lot of damage though.
I think the last I heard, they rated it an EF-4 tornado.  And 22 were injured, and no deaths.  That was a very large tornado that ripped through the heart of town. Please keep my family down and all the others that were effected by the tornado, in your thoughts and prayers.

With the sadness of what had happened to my family down south.  I was able to have my first thunderstorm of the season for me. I have been waiting awhile now, for a thunderstorm!  So when it hit, I was excited.  Really happy knowing it is storm season again.

A little after 9 pm an EF-1 tornado hit the Ogle County and it had lifted just before it hit Will and I as we did storm spotting.  It touched down just East of Oregon.  And headed right for us.  Ended up being a lot of power poles and power lines, and some structures damaged. Thankfully it was mostly farmland that it crossed. Below are some photos I took of the damage.

After the tornado hit, it was literally stars and the moon right after.

I was able to see an amazing meteor fly across the sky as well!

So it was a day full of emotions and Mother Nature.

Rickie Traeger: March 4th Blog

Good morning or evening, however you look at it.  It is 12:38 am as I write this.

I was sick earlier today and just laid in bed. I haven’t  had much sleep.  I am feeling better now, still under the weather some.  I am watching some X-Files and kicking back.  I am able to finally eat some. I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Probably not idealistic considering I am under the weather still some. But I figured it would coat my stomach some.

I was looking at the weather forecast.  It looks like it is going to be a nice weekend!  Speaking of weather.  The tornado that hit the Nashville areas the other night. My condolences goes to those family and friends who lost their loved ones.  It hit overnight and the last I heard there were 22 fatalities. I heard there were two tornadoes. An EF-4 and an EF-3 that hit that area.  I have saw a few videos of the tornado at night, it looked like a big stovepipe tornado. And at the time it still had yet to break daylight so the main damage area was not published yet. I saw a few trees down and a business wall blown down.  Then later on in the day I saw more videos and photos of the damage that was being released. And it is a sad situation. Please keep everyone effected in your thoughts and prayers.
